New York in Berlin

As a young singer in New York I remember NYIOP’s early days. They’re 25 now and have grown and expanded to holding auditions in several countries including Berlin this December. They get legitimate people from good theaters and have had a knowledgeable pianist as well, but it’s a real NY style cattle call. The good news for American singers is that they seem to be conducted in English but that is bad news for getting a job here since German theaters almost always insist that singers speak their language. The upcoming Berlin auditions are also very close to Christmas and the New Year, a very slow time for theaters to hire or hold auditions.. People have gotten jobs through NYIOP auditions, so it does happen, but not very often. New York in Berlin

If you’re going to do the auditions you should understand that it’s probably the first step in a longer process which may involve going to the theater for another audition. It’s important to be positively remembered. Tito Gobbi, a long ago famous Italian baritone, told the story of somersaulting onto a table at an early audition and while I wouldn’t recommend such a stunt, you do have to get their attention, so choose something that shows off your strength. They may not hire you but they will remember you, and that may help you down the road. If you’re not ready, WAIT. Learn to speak German or work with good coaches to find out how they do it and where you fit in.
