School’s Out!
As of today(July 18) Berlin is officially in Sommer Ferien. The starting date varies from State to State so everyone won’t be gone at the same time and the roads won’t all be jammed, For Germans, school vacation is everyone’s vacation. Six weeks although not everyone is required to take time off during the summer or even all at once. Some divide it up or work through the summer so they can vacation later. Theaters however are closed during Ferien, although there are lots of summer festivals. As a freelancer I used to pick up good work in the summer, and it can be a nice way to combine a family vacation since with work there’s often lots of free time after rehearsals are over. If you’re Fest in a theater you get a regular paycheck during Ferien, and you might just be grateful for the respite, but you are locked into the Sommer Ferien scheduled for you State. Always check with your theater for exact dates when you’re required to be there, even if you don’t have rehearsals, but the Spielzeit begins with the end of Sommer Ferien, and runs through until the next Sommer Ferien, which by the way will probably begin on a different date.It can be confusing but six weeks makes for a nice vacation and www.schulferienc.org takes some figuing out but has all the information about
Ferien as well as National and local holidays.
